When friends exchange negative feedback

چکیده
In four studies, we document an increase in the amount of negative feedback friends and colleagues exchange as their relationship deepens. We find that both actual and perceived relationship depth increase the amount of negative feedback people seek from and provide to each other, aswell as their tendency to invest in a focal (relationship or performance) goal in response to negative feedback. The amount of positive feedback on goal pursuit, by contrast, remains stable as the relationship deepens. We attribute the increase in negative feedback to the different meaning of such feedback for people in deep versus shallow relationships: only in the context of deep relationships does negative feedback signal insufficient resource investment in the focal goal, and hence close friends andcolleagues seek, provide, and respond tonegative feedback.

Linkages among adolescent girls' romantic relationships, best friendships, and peer networks.
This study examined the linkages among girls' best friendships and romantic relationships and accounted for the level of dating involvement as a moderating variable. Social exchange and Sullivan's socioemotional theories served as guides in this process. Questionnaires were administered to 446 girls aged 15-19 years. Results showed that: (a) dating is associated with more positive and less nega...
متن کاملThrough the Looking Glass: Effects of Feedback on Self-Awareness and Conversation during Video Chat
Video chat is a popular form of computer-mediated communication in a range of contexts from online job interviews to chatting with friends. Although seeing your own video feedback is the predominant interface design, self-awareness research suggests that seeing oneself could induce self-consciousness and affect interaction. We created a custom video chat application and asked pairs of strangers...

a r t i c l e i n f o To explain the high level of altruism among unrelated friends, some people propose that friends may apply the feeling and emotions that underlie kin-selected nepotism to each other. Alternatively, altruism among friends may be sustained by an evolved psychology that is sensitive to the dynamic of contingent reciprocity. A recent study (Stewart-Williams, S., 2007. Altruism ...

Participants completed self reports of shyness and loneliness and web logs of their interactions with friends both in person and on-line. Among the results, th...
متن کاملMathematical Modeling of Bacteria Communication in Continuous Cultures
Quorum sensing is a bacterial cell-to-cell communication mechanism and is based on gene regulatory networks, which control and regulate the production of signaling molecules in the environment. In the past years, mathematical modeling of quorum sensing has provided an understanding of key components of such networks, including several feedback loops involved. This paper presents a simple system...
